Dyeing with Dirt, Printing with Nature


Dirt dye samples by Meg Manderson.

Using local red clay dirt, plants, and other materials from nature, you'll explore a variety of techniques to alter and enhance your surface designs. Learn how to achieve lovely shades of orange to rust to yellow and brown. Explore printing with leaves, pinecones and more.

Materials to purchase from instructor ($5 fee):

  • paint

Students should bring:

  • several small buckets or large jars
  • small, sandwich-sized plastic bags with samples of dirt you have collected. (I will provide more at the workshop.) Choose different locations, including under pine or oak trees, by a creek bank etc. Construction sites are great sources!
  • leaves, pinecones, insect cases, grasses, flowers, flat or flat-sided rocks, seashells, really anything that looks like it might be interesting to print with
  • 3-4 yards of fabric, white and solids, cut to the size you wish to make your samples. The white fabric can be PFD (prepared for dyeing) but does not have to be.
  • plastic drop cloth, cut into smaller pieces to work on and let your pieces dry on
  • brayer roller or kitchen rolling pin
  • 3 or 4 sponge brushes
  • several Styrofoam food trays, washed, to use as palettes.

Inspired by Nature: Art Quilts


Leaf Play II by Norma Bradley.

Learn to abstract ideas and allow what you see and feel to inspire your design. Working with fusible web on fabric, learn basic fusing techniques, free-hand cutting and improvisational assemblage. Free-motion machine embroidery and other surface design techniques will be demonstrated and discussed.

Aprons are back! Come sew a pattern of your choice, and then embellish the heck out of it! Learn to use all or some of the following: appliqué; making and using your own bias tape; incorporating raw edges; trimming with rickrack; embroidery; image transfer; creating scallop hemlines, panel inserts, and more!

Pillow Talk


Pillows by Valerie Shrader.

Make unique pillows using the fabrics of your choice—hand-dyed, hand-printed, woven, repurposed, or purchased. Use basic construction methods and embellishment techniques to create a custom set of pillows, exploring new options in each class. Bring your own fabrics and trim, or buy them at Cloth.

Intro to forms — knife-edge, bolster, mock box, box
Intro to stuffing — fiberfill, pillow forms
Basic construction techniques — knife-edge (machine or hand stitch opening, overlap)

Class 2: Mock box or box
Inserting zippers — invisible, standard
Technique — mock box
Technique — boxing strips, standard and with piping
Piping — making bias strips, enclosing cording, installation

Class 3: Bolster or cushion (round forms)
Intro to embellishment techniques: appliqué, embroidery, patchwork, panels, free-motion stitching, ruching, tucks, etc.
Technique — working in the round (bolster or cushion)

Class 4: Improvisation
Adding flaps, unique shapes, buttons and buttonholes, deconstruction techniques, related forms – mix and match from previous classes

Creating Pattern on Fabric: Block Printing

Create and print designs onto cloth. Learn to carve your designs into a rubber-like material which will then be used, along with textile paints, to block print surface patterns on silk or cotton. Printed fabric can be used to make home furnishings and wearables. Expect to leave with a scarf or runner of your own design!

Decorative Surface Design on Cloth & Paper

Using textile paints and a wide variety of surface design techniques, such as painting, stamping, mono-printing, scrafitto, and drawing, you'll create one-of-a-kind decorative designs onto paper and fabric. The results are perfect for clothing, collage, home furnishings, and book making.

Marvelous Felted Mittens


Felt mittens by Lisa Klakulak.

Design and wet-felt stylish wool fleece mittens. First learn to design a two-dimensional resist to create seamless hollow forms. Then use a variety of design techniques on the surface of the mittens before they are fulled or agitated to shrink them for a perfect, personalized fit!

Creative Play: Silk Screening

Explore pattern, color, and imagery through screen printing and direct application of thickened Procion MX dyes. You'll experiment with mark making, and pattern and image possibilities using silk screens in an intuitive, painterly way. Stencils, masks, and resists will continue our exploration of personal marks and iconography.

  • any existing stencils
  • any bits of lace, netting or other stencil like fabrics
  • T-pins #20, 1 1/4" long (approx 80—enough to pin fabric and drop cloth to the table)*
  • X-ACTO™ knife and sharp pointed blades
  • cutting surface
  • containers with lids, at least five 1c containers (yogurt, etc.) for dyes
  • hair dyer if you have one
  • old towel
  • 2 or more blank silk screens and matching squeegees—12" x 18", 16" x 18" squeegees, should be 1 to 1.5" shorter than the inside of the narrowest width. Screens and squeegees are available from Dick Blick Art Materials.
  • if you have screens with patterns etc you want to use please bring them too
  • duct tape if you have not taped your screens
  • squeeze bottle (e.g., for ketchup or hair tinting)
  • roll of clear contact paper
  • 3-5 yards of white or light colored cotton*, linen, silk* or rayon. Thin silks can be layered for ghost effects. One of my favorites is Test Fabric's lightweight twill. You can also use your own pre-dyed fabrics to experiment on top of. The fabric should be washed and dried.

Fiber Fun

We usually devote little time to experiment with new techniques or products. Fiber Fun is about spending one day discovering how to make silk paper with roving, work with Tyvek, make and use stamps, use foils, make a fabric with soluble material and miscellaneous fibers, make cords to couch, etc.

Saturday, September 27

  • hand-dyed silk roving (approx. 6-8")

  • 5 ½" x 6 ½" piece of synthetic felt (to paint and heat to create textures).

Students should bring:

  • a wire coat hanger
  • a plastic garbage bag (kitchen size) to protect your table
  • many kinds of decorative threads, yarns, chenille thread, very thin strips of fabrics, ribbons—anything that you would like to play with

  • old towel (to use as ironing surface)
  • if you have fabric paints, bring them
  • if you have a heat gun, bring it.

Cochineal, Pomegranate & Moss [Lecture/demonstration]


Rug by the Chavez family.

Discover the beauty of natural dyes with Eric Chavez Santiago and his sister Janet, weavers and dyers from the village of Teotitlan del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico. They will discuss and demonstrate traditional Zapotec methods used to prepare skeins of handspun wool for weaving and other applications. Learn about the cochineal insect and how to achieve three different shades of cochineal—purple, maroon and orange—by changing the Ph of the dye bath. Also learn to dye with pomegranate and mosses. The use of indigo and pecans will also be discussed.

Shibori & Tie-Dye with Procion "M" Dyes

Create your own cloth for wall hangings, fabrics for clothing, and quilts with Procion “M” dyes using tie-dye and shibori techniques. Explore a wide variety of patterns on cotton or rayon. This is an excellent introduction to a popular surface design tradition.

Creative Play: Painting with MX Dyes & Potato Dextrin

Explore pattern, color, and imagery with direct application of thickened Procion MX dyes. This technique lets you use the dyes in a more controlled and painterly manner. Also learn how to use potato dextrin resist, and how to cure and steam set the MX dyes.

Creative Play: Explorations in Cloth

Working with a wide variety of one-of-a-kind handmade fabrics, you’ll learn how to collage and layer them to make wonderful, unique designs. You’ll explore personal imagery, and learn to work with iron-on adhesives and machine and hand sewing. This approach can be used to make quilts and clothing.

Sculpting Felt: Lidded Vessels

Obtain in-depth knowledge of the materials and process of the art of felting while creating a lidded vessel. You’ll partially felt wool fleece around a sphere-shaped form, and then further sculpt the vessel by applying different methods of agitation. Finish your vessel and lid with solid felt adornments, such as knobs, handles, and feet.

Hooked on Rugs

Traditional rug hooking never looked so good! Using repurposed, over-dyed wool that is cut into strips, you'll pull wool through monk's cloth or linen backing to create a fabulous pillow-sized piece. Kit provided. A great and fun way to learn the art of rug hooking.

Sewing for Weavers

Clean out that stash of hand-woven fabric! Learn to cut and sew a jacket, coat, or blouse from pre-tested patterns. In this class you'll address pattern adaptation, piecing, lining, interfacing, and buttons. Some basic sewing skill is required.

  • interfacing, if desired

  • your finished handwoven fabric
  • notions including thread, buttons, lining, etc.
  • a pattern of your choice that you have pre-rested with a muslin
  • sharp scissors*, large and small
  • straight pins*
  • favorite sewing tools
  • sewing machine, extra needles and manual

    optional:
  • serger, extra needles and manual
  • large cutting mat*
  • rotary cutter* and extra blades
